tide's out
Tide's Out is a short, web based graphic strip about a day at the beach.
Approach:
My story is a firsthand experience I had while in Hawaii. My friend and I had heard of a remote beach that we supposed to be a spectacular place to go snorkeling so we decided to check it out. After a very long drive we finally made it to the beach. It was miles long and we were the only ones on it, it was amazing. After diving in the water we were treated to a spectacular display of aquatic biodiversity; every kind of of fish you can imagine, sea turtles, manta rays, eels, and octopi. After snorkeling on the far side of the reef for several hours we realized that the tide had gone out and we could no longer swim back to shore over the reef! Walking over it was not an option either as it was still submerged a few inches below the surface and covered in razor sharp coal and pointed sea-urchins. Luckily it didn’t take us long to find a passage through the reef back to shore and we made it out okay, it was pretty scary at first though. Just as we got to the beach the sun set and we watched it before packing up. The stars that night were stunning.
Concept:
My concept is fairly straightforward, basic story telling with emphasis on a few key parts of that day. First off I really wanted to give the reader a sense of how long the drive to this beach was, and then the isolation of the location. Next I tried to show the beauty and diversity of the animals we saw that day. Then there was the momentary panic of being trapped out at sea and the relief of finding a way back. Finally, I wanted to convey a sense of accomplishment and closure.
